What is sushi?
Sushi is rice that is filled or topped with raw, cooked, or marinated fish, vegetables, egg,
or shellfish. There are many different ways of preparing sushi, here are a few common ones:
Rolled Sushi -
maki zuzhi or nori maki
This type of sushi generally consists of rice, fish, and/or vegetables. It is rolled into a
cylindrical shape, held together by nori seaweed, and then cut into bite-size pieces. We
recommend that you eat this type of sushi as soon as it is served because the nori seaweed
tends to absorb moisture from the rice and become soggy. If eaten right away, the
nori will remain crispy.
Hand-rolled Sushi -
temaki zushi
Similar to
Rolled Sushi, the main difference is that
temaki zushi is hand-rolled into the shape of a cone, and is not cut.
Hand-formed Sushi -
nigiri zushi
To make this type of sushi, a master sushi chef will squeeze
some rice into an oval, put a small amount of wasabi on it, and then place a topping on it.
Generally the topping is fish, but other ingredients such as egg are also common.
